Happy Lunar New Year 🧧🌚 Coming of age in San Francisco's New Chinatown (the inner Richmond ♥️) was enormously comforting. It's the only place that feels like home in the Bay Area. I ate noodles on Clement Street almost every evening, at family-run restaurants that all knew my favorite dishes 🍜 The colorful frogs and fish in 6th Avenue Aquarium & Flowers were hallowed company, reminding me of my dad's joy marveling at tropical species 🐠🐟🐡 My dry cleaner lovingly tended to my navy blazer; she knew its investment for a brand new professional, and me by name. The neighborhood was a refuge of kindness and generosity in a rapidly tech-y city, where I felt truly cared for by strangers. So my heart is heavy hearing about the pandemic hate crimes against Chinatowns and elderly Asian Americans, sacred people and places 💔 From Japanese internment to violence overseas, the AAPI community is far too familiar with xenophobia and racism that come with white supremacy. Tonight's virtual healing vigil with @apen4ej and allies in Oakland (another Chinatown that uplifted me daily while working in Jack London Square) felt poignant and powerful. The resilient Ox perseveres 🐃🎋🐂 ... but we should never have to fight for physical safety 😢
